Trust Awards $96,789 in Small Project Grants

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority Board of Trustees today awarded $96,789 in grants for 10 projects around the state. The grants fund a wide range of projects and programs that assist people with mental illness, developmental disabilities, chronic alcoholism and other substance related disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, and traumatic brain injury that results in permanent brain injury.

Grantees include:

  • Content Producers Guild, Anchorage – $10,000 to fund a four-part series of statewide radio programs focusing on mental health challenges faced by Alaskans.
  • Denali Education Center, Denali National Park – $8,500 to fund WILD (Wilderness Intensive Learning Development) about Denali, a unique camping program offered to Alaskan youth and adults experiencing mental illness, behavioral challenges and developmental disabilities.
  • Fairbanks Community Behavioral Health Center, Fairbanks – $10,000 to fund Sowing the Seeds of Growth, which provides therapeutic gardening opportunities for individuals experiencing mental illness.
  • NAMI Juneau, Juneau – $10,000 to fund Veterans Standing Together, which will provide an opportunity for veterans to receive peer support for post traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism and other mental disabilities.
  • Out North, Anchorage – $9,950 to fund 10,000 Cranes for Alaska, a one-woman performance tour, workshops, and companion DVD that will educate the public about suicide prevention.
  • Petersburg Mental Health Services Inc., Petersburg – $9,999 to improve the quality of life of senior citizens through events and community resources.
  • Presbyterian Hospitality House, Inc., Fairbanks – $10,000 to purchase equipment for telepsychiatry for adolescents diagnosed as severely emotionally disturbed.
  • Rainforest Recovery Center, Juneau – $8,340 to replace furniture to better utilize a large meeting room for group sessions for individuals in recovery from substance abuse and other addiction disorders.
  • Sitka’s Faith in Action, Sitka – $10,000 to fund Brave Heart Volunteers’ expansion of peer support and grief and bereavement programs for people directly affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
  • The Assistive Technology Library of Alaska, Anchorage – $10,000 to replace and update assistive technology devices.

The Trust annually budgets $250,000 for new and innovative small projects of $10,000 or less that are a direct benefit to Trust beneficiaries. These beneficiaries include people with mental illness, developmental disabilities, chronic alcoholism and other substance related disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, and traumatic brain injury that results in permanent brain injury.
